Interstate travel not sole cause of Covid-19 spike, says KJ

PETALING JAYA: Interstate travel alone will not cause a spike in Covid-19 cases, health minister Khairy Jamaluddin said today.

This follows the announcement that the government would be lifting the interstate travel ban nationwide when 90% of adults are fully vaccinated.

Khairy was responding to Dzulkefly Ahmad (PH-Kuala Selangor) who said that 90% of adults vaccinated will only make up about 60% of the whole population.

“The vaccination of teenagers has yet to be completed,” the former health minister said.

In reply, Khairy said the government, in deciding on the travel relaxation, had said that gatherings, not mobility alone, was the cause of new spikes in Covid-19 cases.

“That’s why we need to look at public health measures.”

He added the government will also start catching up on teen vaccinations.

Meanwhile, Khairy said the government was discussing contingency measures to address possible spikes in Covid-19 cases as the country moves into the pre-endemic stage of the disease.

“For certain locations where the spread is out of control, we must consider introducing fast circuit-breaker measures to stop the spread of Covid-19.

“What we want to avoid is a total national or state-wide lockdown. So we will have in place a fast circuit-breaker system.”
