KUALA LUMPUR (3 December 2021): The Malaysia Purple League (MPL) promises yet another smashing season. Badminton enthusiasts will be able to witness the exciting talents vying for honours in this much-awaited competition.
All eyes will be on the Top Glove Purple League Pro-Am 2021 (TGPLPA) which kicks off later this month. The TGPLPA is open to young professional players from local clubs in Malaysia and MPL fans can expect mouth-watering clashes.
The inaugural edition of the TGPLPA which was held last year, featured former national shuttlers such as Lim Chi Wing, Yeoh Seng Zoe, Liew Daren and Soong Joo Ven, who claimed the men’s singles honours after beating Iskandar Zulkarnain in the finals.
Mr. Ho Khek Mong, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the MPL, said he has no doubts that the tournament will keep all young players motivated to train continuously throughout the year. He was also thankful to the clubs for actively grooming upcoming talents.
“The creation of the U-23 TGPLPA is mainly to help nurture young players with potential in the country, regardless of their status as national or club players. Many of those with potential are pressured to choose between furthering their academic studies or focus on developing their badminton game after SPM. Hence, the creation of this platform will serve as another program for the clubs to mark in their yearly calendar to keep the juniors motivated in training and I would like to thank them for grooming these upcoming talents” said Khek Mong. He expressed hope that one day, these players will shine and do well in world class tournaments.
Khek Mong, who is part of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM)’s development committee, added “I hope to be able to contribute to Malaysia’s badminton junior players with the experience and knowledge that I have. I am also hoping to work closer with BAM and other state badminton associations to provide more competitive platforms for the uprising junior players.”
The MPL and BAM are also aware of the Covid-19 pandemic and are committed in their efforts to see that the competitions go ahead as planned and meet the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) set by the government. Top Glove remain committed as title sponsors for this season’s edition. The draw will be held soon.
The TGPLPA will be held from the 21st of December 2021 to the 26th of December 2021 at the Kompleks Kejiranan Presint 11 in Putrajaya. A total of 10 teams have confirmed participation. The teams will be divided into two groups to compete in a single round-robin format. The top 2 teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals.
