Cinemas, theatres to reopen on July 1, subject to maximum 250 people

PUTRAJAYA: Cinemas, theatres and live event spaces will be allowed to reopen from July 1, Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said today.

He said this will only be for enclosed halls or spaces, adding that the maximum number of people allowed will be 250, subject to the size of the area.

“If they can only fit fewer than 250 people with 1m social distancing, then it has to be fewer than 250 people,” he said at a press conference.

He said strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) must be adhered to, including marking seats to ensure social distancing and recording the temperatures of visitors.

Ismail also announced that Putrajaya will allow meetings, conferences, seminars and training courses to be held with a maximum number of 250 participants from July 1.

He said this applies to all organisations registered under the Registrar of Societies (RoS), Malaysia Sports Commissioner Office, and the Registrar of Youth who plan to hold general meetings.

Also allowed are meetings and general meetings for companies registered under the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), corporations under the cooperative Commission of Malaysia (SKM), societies under the Farmers’ Organisation Authority (LPP) and parent-teacher associations.

The SOP for these meetings will be set by the RoS and can be used by companies or groups not registered under the department, he said.

Ismail also said Putrajaya had received a proposal today to allow wedding ceremonies to be conducted with more people present.

He said the National Security Council will discuss the matter in detail tomorrow, including whether to allow up to 250 or more people to attend these ceremonies, and an announcement can be expected on Wednesday.
