JOM BITES: MORE THAN BURGER AND FRIES

Written By : Imran Razib

Calling itself Your Neighbourhood Joint, Morbites has added Nasi Lemak into its menu of burgers, fries, and nachos. Hanim Mohd gives it a try.

Regardless of what situation we’re in, one thing for certain is we need to eat. Sometimes I feel that I’ve exhausted most of my food ideas. Having to cook for six people in the age group that range from 18-55 is no easy feat. While burgers and fries attract the younger adults, the elders prefer their usual staple like rice.

Since eating out is not an option, having them delivered is the next best thing to do especially with the various delivery platforms that are available these days.

Dubbed ‘Your Neighbourhood Joint’, Morbites offers more than just burgers and fries now. It has included Nasi Lemak in their menu plus new additions to its existing list of burgers.

The new burgers are Black Pepper Burger (available in beef and chicken), Kids Slider Set (a choice of two sliders of either beef, chicken or mix) and Buttermilk Crispy Chikin Burger.

And of course, we go for its latest items – Black Pepper Beef Burger, Buttermilk Crispy Chikin, Nasi Lemak Ayam Serai Morbites, Kids Sliders Burger and its classic Nachos with beef con carne and Chicken Chilli Fries.

TAKING THE BITES
Morbites’ Nasi Lemak Ayam Serai is not your average Nasi Lemak. The coconut rice is multi-coloured with blue-pea butterfly flowers lending one of its colours. It is quite attractive, after all, you eat with your eyes first.
The rice set comes with a piece of lemongrass-marinated fried chicken, fried egg, a handful portion of fried peanuts and ikan bilis, and the must-have sambal tumis.

The rice is fragrant enough and its signature serai chicken is not too bad either. All the components complement each other. For RM12, its value for money.

Moving to its burgers. I start with the Black Pepper Beef Burger. It is a rib eye beef patty sandwiched between a soft potato bun. The in-house baked bun is soft and wins my heart at first bite, followed by the beef patty that has been smothered in Morbites black pepper in-house sauce. The added onion jam with cheese and lettuce brings it to another level.

The Buttermilk Crispy Chikin does not disappoint either. Stacked between a soft potato bun too, is a piece of deep-fried chicken patty in yet another in-house sauce – buttermilk sauce. For me anything deep fried is tasty, especially when it’s done right, and this one hits the right note.

For the Kids Slider set, we have a mix of beef and chicken. It is suitable for children or small eaters. The beef slider is a mini version of Morbites Chezburger while the chicken slider is a mini version of their Hail Caesar burger consisting of chicken breast patty doused in creamy caesar sauce and I can’t get enough of the tasty onion jam in both sliders.

Both the kids’ sliders come in mini brioche-like buns unlike the soft potato buns in the other burgers which I like even though they are a bit soggy by the time I get to devour them.

With burgers as their main fare, the burgers rank high in my book. I find it difficult to decide which is my favourite. But I promise to take my brood to dine-in at Morbites once we’re allowed to.

THE SIDES
We have Nachos and Fries with beef con carne and fries with chicken chilli respectively. Both the toppings which are to be poured during serving, are packed in separate containers.
To get the best results, I heat up the nachos and fries in the airfryer and the toppings in the microwave. The aroma of the toppings smells as good as it tastes. All is gone within seconds. Another must order item to our dine in list.
Since Morbites is somewhat an American inspired burger joint, of course it has milkshakes to go with the burgers. Our 20-year-old says that the Choco Loco milkshake “is to die for!”.
