Authentically Chinese crispy fried wontons

Written By : Siti Khadijah

Malaysians are very familiar with wonton, a type of Chinese dumpling. They come in small parcels and are available in many forms – steamed, deep-fried or in soup.

Each wonton contains a savoury meat or seafood filling encased in a flour wrapper that is commonly made with egg yolk.

Fried dumplings are available at Chinese restaurants and are also served with wonton noodles at many hawker stalls in Malaysia. It is absolutely delicious as an appetiser with a sweet-and-sour dipping sauce.

These are crispy, aromatic, and can be whipped up in under half an hour at home.

Ingredients

200g ground meat such as chicken or pork
100g prawns, chopped into small pieces
1/2 teaspoon soy sauce or fish sauce
1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
3 dashes ground white pepper
1 pack store-bought wonton wrappers
Water for sealing
Vegetable oil for deep frying
Chopped coriander and sesame seeds for garnishing (optional)

Method

In a bowl, mix the ground meat, prawns, soy sauce, sesame oil and white pepper. Stir well to form a sticky filling.
Place a wonton wrapper on your palm and add a half tablespoon of the filling in the middle.

Dip your index finger into the water and trace it on the outer edges of the wrapper. Fold it up to form a triangle and pinch the edges to seal tight.

Heat up some oil and deep-fry the wontons until golden brown. Place the fried wontons onto paper towels to soak up excess oil.

Transfer to a plate and garnish with optional sesame seeds and chopped coriander.

Serve hot with Chinese sweet-and-sour sauce or Thai sweet chili sauce.

Tip

There are other ways to wrap the wontons. You can pull the two corners of the triangle down so one overlaps the other, pinch and seal with water.
