KUALA LUMPUR (21 December 2021): Serdang Badminton Club got off to an explosive start in the Top Glove Purple League Pro-Am 2021 (TGPLPA) after making short work of Bangi City BC 13-4 in their opening game at the Kompleks Kejiranan Presint 11 in Putrajaya today.
The mixed doubles pair of Kashley Kho Tze Yin – Yap Qar Siong made a stellar start for Serdang BC when they overcame their opponent’s Mohamad Najmi Kamarudin – Siti Farhanan Nabilah 10-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-8 in the opening game.
Serdang BC continued with their smashing form as Too Ming Yap put aside Muhhammad Affan 11-6, 11-5, 11-9 in 27 minutes before Bangi City bounced back after two straight defeats when their women’s singles player Nurul Aisyah Ahmad defeated Teh Won Quin 6-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-4.
Serdang BC ended Bangi City’s hopes of a comeback when Boon Xin Yuan – Wong Tien Ci defeated Fawwaz Zainuddin – Muhammad Aizat 11-8, 11-9, 11-2 in the men’s doubles.
Serdang BC sealed their win when Lee Shirley – Lee Zhi Qing defeated Ariessa Sofea Azhar and Fairuz Fadlin Fadzal in straight sets 11-2, 11-6 and 11-8 in the women’s doubles.
Serdang BC’s team manager, Datuk Ong Ewe Hock was present at the hall today and was delighted with his team’s performance. He said “It was a great win for us, and we believe we can achieve our target of reaching the semi-finals. It is an honour for us to be part of the competitive TGPLPA as we can battle against the top badminton clubs in the country.”
Also present at Kompleks Kejiranan Presint 11 was Malaysia Purple League’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Ho Khek Mong who was delighted with the support shown today by the teams. He said, “I’m happy to see almost 80% of state champions and top players present in this tournament. The first day as proven to be a success and I hope that the teams will continue to play better as the tournament progresses.”
Meanwhile, heavyweights Butterworth BC edged DSBC Labuan by a single game in a mouth-watering fixture, which saw former national shuttler Goh Jin Wei and her partner Ch’ng Choo Han lose to Fong Kuo Yoong and Goh Shuen Tong 11-9, 6-11, 11-10, 7-11, 11-8 in the mixed doubles.
Jin Wei failed to make an impression competing for the first time in the mixed doubles category. But Jin Wei said she was honoured to be a part of a prestigious tournament like the TGPLPA.
“I’m grateful to Butterworth BC for trusting and including me in this wonderful team. Though I lost the game today, I still believe that my fitness level is on par with the rest, I can assure that I will be able to do my very best in my next match.” said Jin Wei.
The afternoon fixture on the first day of competition also saw Ampang Jaya BC and Bandar Maharani defeating their opponents. Second seeds Ampang Jaya BC defeated Jinjang BC 12-6 while Bandar Maharani BC shocked Petaling Jaya BC by a narrow victory margin of 9-8.
The first day of the competition will conclude with Butterworth BC facing Serdang BC and DSBC Labuan battling Seremban City BC respectively at 6:00 pm. Heavyweights Butterworth BC and Serdang BC will both be seeking for a faultless start to the competition while DSBC Labuan will be looking to overcome their early upset as they face a fresh Seremban City BC later this evening.
The TGPLPA will continue all week at the at the Kompleks Kejiranan Presint 11 in Putrajaya. The 10 teams will compete in a single round-robin format in their respective groups and the top 2 teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals.
