The indomitable badminton giants cruised to the SRPLP semi-finals with ease
SHAH ALAM (6 OCTOBER 2022): The sixth day of the SENHENG redOne Purple League Professional 2022 (SRPLP) saw both Puchong United BC and Sena Bangkok Club living up to badminton fan’s expectations by elegantly securing their spots in the semi-finals which is scheduled to take place at Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting.
In spite of having already guaranteed their semi-final spot through their exceptional campaign in the group stages, both these elite badminton clubs had to face off in a final battle in their group stage match to determine their status as Group B champions and runners up.
As players scrambled to salvage as many points for their respective clubs, Puchong United BC’s 2017 Kuala Lumpur Southeast Asian Games silver medallist, Lim Chi Wing made a stellar start for his team when he overcame his Thai opponent Kachain Buarung 11-5 11-6 11-4 in the opening game.
Known for his energetic display, Chi Wing showed sheer consistency as he only took 17 minutes to defeat his opponent in straight sets. The zestful and exuberant player who ensured Puchong United BC with an early 3-0 game score lead said, “I’m delighted to give my team an early lead in this fiery fixture. I hope to continue this momentum and be on track with my team’s ambitions and goals for this tournament.”
The second match of the exhilarating affair saw Puchong United BC’s elite shuttler Sonia Cheah losing to Sena Bangkok Club’s world’s 12th ranked Busanan Ongbamrungphan 11-6 4-11 11-8 8-11 1-6.
Puchong United BC’s Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi went on to inspire an influential win against Kittisak Namdash – Tan Wee Kiong 9-11 11-8 11-6 7-11 11-6 in the men’s doubles category.
The victorious pair who has clean record of winning all their matches in this tournament said, “It’s always tough for us to go against a top-class player like Wee Kiong. Since we have trained with him in multiple occasions, we know his pros and cons hence we are glad in creating a formidable winning streak throughout this tournament with this victory.”
Tan Kian Meng-Goh Liu Ying ended Sena Bangkok Club’s hopes of a comeback when the mixed doubles pair defeated Pongsakorn Thongkham – Peeraya Munkitamorn 3-0 (11-8 11-10 11-10).
The jubilant 2016 Rio Olympics silver medallist Goh Liu Ying who partnered with Tan Kian Meng said, “As a pair, I’m happy that we have made amends to our previous game mistakes by winning our first set match. I would like to also take this oppurtnuity to thank Tan Kian Meng for rendering his hard work in order for us to triumph against our opponent and I hope we continue to flourish in our upcoming crucial semi-final fixture against Ampang Jaya BC.”
Puchong United BC sealed their victory in style when experienced shuttler Liew Daren defeated Kittipong Imnark in straight sets 11-8 11-5 11-8 in the men’s singles while giving Puchong United BC a 14-5 game score victory.
Commending on Puchong United BC’s progress to the semi-finals, its team manager Irina Inosemtzeva was ecstatic with her team’s progress to the semis. She said all their hard work had paid dividends. “We have been preparing for this tournament since last year, I am glad the players have been consistent in their performance.”
Meanwhile, the final game of today’s 8pm fixture will conclude with Serdang BC going against Ho Chi Minh City Badminton Club. The semi-finals which is set to take place at Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting will see Ampang Jaya battling against Puchong United BC while Sena Bangkok Club is set to face Petaling BC in their fiery semi-final fixture.
