Table toppers maintains its scintillating form in the sixth edition of SRPLP
SHAH ALAM (4 OCTOBER 2022): Puchong United BC have made heads turn when their illustrious shuttlers displayed a convincing performance in their second match of the tournament against Ho Chi Minh City BC. The defending champions maintained its explosive start in their Group B after making short work of Ho Chi Minh City BC 13-5 at the Malawati Stadium, Shah Alam today.
Lim Chi Wing who won a silver medal in the 2017 Kuala Lumpur Southeast Asian Games made a stellar start for Puchong United BC when he overcame his Vietnamese opponent Phan Phuc Thinh 11-4 8-11 11-4 11-7 in the opening game.
Puchong United BC’s smashing form was halted in the second match as elite shuttler Sonia Cheah fell to Ho Chi Minh City BC’s 2021 Hanoi Sea Games bronze medallist, Vu Thi Trang 8-11 11-8 4-11 8-11 in 26 minutes in the women’s singles category.
Commending on her match performance, Sonia said, “This is not an easy game for me especially going against a top opponent like Thi Trang. I’m unable to perform my best due to the injuries that I have sustained on both my ankles. I hope to recover the soonest with an aim to improve my world rankings and get back on track in the upcoming 2022 Indonesia International Challenge while fighting for a spot in next year’s SEA and Asian Games.”
The tables were quickly turned in the third match when Puchong United BC’s Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi inspired an influential win against Nguyen Duc Hong Phuc-Tran Nguyen Chi Tung in straight sets 11-3 11-3 11-3.
The victorious pair who has now won two consecutive matches for Puchong United BC said, “We were always ready to face a tactically strong opponent like Nguyen Duc Hong Phuc-Tran Nguyen Chi Tung. We prepared for this in advance, and we’re delighted to emerge victorious against a tough opponent. We’re now looking forward to fight for our team in our upcoming match against Sena Bangkok Club.”
Tan Kian Meng-Goh Liu Ying ended Ho Chi Minh City BC’s hopes of a comeback when the mixed doubles pair defeated Nguyen Anh-Lam My Tien 3-1 (11-10,5-11,11-6,11-6).
The jubilant 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist Goh Liu Ying who partnered with Tan Kian Meng said, “To be honest, we both need to be more focused in our game and stop making silly mistakes in our first set. We tend to always find our rhythm from the second set onwards. However, I must thank Tan Kian Meng for rendering his hard work in order for us to triumph against our opponent in this crucial match.”
Puchong United BC sealed their victory in style when experienced shuttler Liew Daren defeated Nguyen Hai Dang in straight sets 11-7 11-9 11-5 in the men’s singles.
Meanwhile, the final game of yesterday’s fixture saw Ampang Jaya BC overpowered Candra Wijaya BC 14-5 to heat up the top 2 race in Group A. The fourth day of SRPLP will conclude today with Serdang BC attempting to make amends to their opening day defeat by facing powerhouse team Sena Bangkok Club in a crucial match at 8:00 pm.
The sixth edition of the SENHENG redONE Purple League will continue to take place at Malawati Stadium, Shah Alam from the 1st to 6th of October. The Grand Finals will be held at Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting on 8th to 9th of October.
